NEWS: WWE to Do Away with the Divas Title & the Term "Diva"
NEWS: WWE is doing away with the term Diva and along with it, the WWE Divas Title. The Company has already designed a new Women's Championship belt, which reportedly looks similar to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, only smaller with a white strap. The term Diva has been used by the WWE since 2008, when Michelle McCool became the inaugural Divas Champion and has been a lucrative branding for the Company, even leading to a successful reality show on mainstream television. The WWE is seeking to change with the times, as the full-time tenure of wrestlers like the Bella Twins have apparently come to an end. WWE Divas Champion Charlotte, who is set to defend her Divas Championship against Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch at WrestleMania, stated the following, "It’s an honor having the Divas championship and there is lots of history behind the Divas Championship. I look at it as a new beginning for women’s wrestling so let’s have a new title. While I’m honored to have the Divas championship, this is 2016 — Let’s make it the women’s championship. But I will be privileged to represent women’s wrestling with a women’s championship or the Divas championship.”
