Despite being the recipient of a human rights award from Amnesty International, Colin Kaepernick is still one of sport's most polarizing figures. Some hail the ex-49ers quarterback as a hero, a civil rights pioneer fighting the struggles of injustice, at the cost of his own career. Others believe he is self-serving and anti-American. There usually is no middle ground when it comes to the controversial ex-NFL star. Former WWE Superstar, Colt Cabana, tweeted the following:
Every @NFL team is an asshole for not wanting a guy like this on their team. https://t.co/YPSIZPaLHE— Colt Cabana (@ColtCabana) April 22, 2018
The tweet caused waves of controversy via social media as wrestling fans were divided along political opinions and either showed their support or condemnation.
Some fans in agreement with Cabana's sentiment tweeted:
Doing the national anthem at all is political. It's faux patriotism in the name of paid military propaganda— Its Marc (@Marc_Geer) April 22, 2018
2 NFC Championship games. Within one play of winning the SuperBowl. 17th highest rated passer in NFL history & the 7th best TD to INT rate in NFL history. Let's not forget about what this is about. #InstitutionalizedRacism #TakeAKnee #PoliceBrutality #BlackLivesMatter pic.twitter.com/u2vDhvm3Ht— The Khemist (@thekhemistlives) April 22, 2018
Some fans were a little less supportive:Declining Stats my ass...... in 2016: 12 games, 2241 yards, 16 TD, 4 INT, Rating=90.7. Yall were saying? And NFL teams are signing guys who haven't played in years? PLEASE!!!! Wake up!!!— Bob V (@VogeDaddy) April 22, 2018
He had major issues with fumbling and turnovers and couldn’t win a game. This idea that he was some top QB when he was playing is false. The headaches he brings to a team with the mass media frenzy are not enough to deal with compared to that of his talent level.— ProfoundProphet (@Pizzzza_Pizzzza) April 23, 2018
Right lol. I mean teams want a media circus over BACKUP players. Teams want to piss off fan bases . Sports is an escape from the world. Ppl don’t want politics in sports— Roger (@rogerhuffman86) April 22, 2018
A guy that wears a shirt with Castro on it and cop/pig socks? Stand up guy— King23 (@TL504) April 22, 2018
No one wants to pay him to disrespect those who served on COMPANY time— Joel D Raab (@joel_raab) April 23, 2018
Haha ya man! What a bunch of assholes for not signing a guy that openly mocks law enforcement and first responders! pic.twitter.com/LrbyzKR0mt— Dave Wildner (@SweetTweetMan) April 22, 2018
Some responses were not suitable for publishing; but, readers interested in seeing more are encouraged to visit Cabana's Twitter page. Vince McMahon famously quipped that players will stand for his newfound XFL league. Some have even speculated that the Anthem controversy is the very reason decided to pursue professional football once again, as it provided him the opportunity to appeal to a disgruntled conservative NFL fan base. Interestingly enough, Cabana is the defendant in a lawsuit filed by WWE Dr. Chris Amann, so the Colin Kaepernick situation wouldn't be the first time Colt Cabana and Vince McMahon found themselves on opposing sides.
