6/14/17 - The Weekly Wrestler - Samoa Joe as Universal Champion, a Samoan Super Stable, & More!!!!

THE WEEKLY WRESTLER

Put the Universal Championship on Samoa Joe....NOW
Samoa Joe was the highlight of RAW for the second week in a row and while that may not seem like much on paper, Samoa Joe is putting out some of the best promo and in-ring work of his illustrious career. Furthermore, Joe is the most intensely realistic wrestler the WWE Universe has seen since....Brock Lesnar. During the opening segment of RAW, Joe, without any visible fear whatsoever, violently confronted Lesnar. The two ambassadors of pain didn't beat around the bush. Instead they did what was expected and reached heights of ultra violence that the entire RAW security and wrestling roster found difficult to contain. Samoa Joe will finally receive the opportunity of his lifetime when he squares off against Lesnar at WWE's new Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view. That's when the WWE needs to do the right thing and put the Title on Samoa Joe. Brock Lesnar is an attraction; but, he isn't a weekly warrior like Joe, who the WWE can count on to truly represent the Company week in and week out. RAW has suffered greatly from not having the Universal Championship on its weekly episodic show and taking the Title off Lesnar would remedy that situation and also increase locker room morale, as Joe will be seen as a Superstar rewarded for his hard work, giving the Title an attainability instead of a piece for celebrities like Lesnar to parade in. Lesnar doesn't need the Title. He is an already proven star and a draw with or without a championship. While Samoa Joe is accomplished, putting the Universal Championship around his waist will allow the entirety of the WWE Universe to see just how fantastic he is. Yes, the WWE is dead set on Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34. While that may be a good match, Samoa Joe vs Roman Reigns would be an even better match, especially given the Samoan dynamic. Joe is every bit of the beast Brock Lesnar is and arguably a more realistically fierce competitor in a wrestling ring. So, why keep the Universal Championship on a part timer when you have a legitimate beast who is there every single day? WWE's plans will be confirmed one way or another at Great Balls of Fire.

Quote of the Week
"I thought Samoa Joe was the worst case scenario....how many Samoans have been in this business and think about all of their accomplishments. They are all related. They all know each other. They are all proud of each other except for one: Samoa Joe. They want nothing to do with them. You know why? You're not a proud warrior that's going to stand toe to toe with Brock Lesnar. You're a mutt. You're a dog...whose defining accomplishment is putting the Kokina Clutch on Paul Heyman. What if Samoa Joe puts the Kokina Clutch on Brock Lesnar? As a punk, as a mutt, as a dog, you will never get the Kokina Clutch on Brock Lesnar. You aren't man enough." - Paul Heyman

Five Things I Think I Think
1. RAW has to do a better job of following up something epic like a Samoa Joe and Brock Lesnar brawl. The Drifter vs Dean Ambrose simply doesn't get the job done and puts the audience to sleep. That would have been a good spot for a Title change or a Hardy Boyz match. Instead, it brought the WWE Universe crashing like a failed sugar high.
2. If Jinder Mahal can win the WWE Championship, Lana can certainly win the SmackDown Women's Championship. Don't sleep on Lana at Money in the Bank.
3. I know that the WWE thinks they have a good thing going with Bring it to the Table; but, the format is the same tired sports opinion television that has run for years on ESPN. While it may be new to wrestling, the rest of us have television sets. It's a stale repetitive format and the time slot would be better filled with shows like Table for 3 or even JBL's now cancelled interview show Legends with JBL. One of the best microphone guy's in the world is currently on WWE's roster, so why not give the Miz a show where he interviews his fellow Superstars? Expand Miz TV and put it on the WWE Network.
4. Chris Jericho certainly sounds like a man that is at peace with being done with wrestling for good. If that's the case, the WWE Universe will miss him dearly. He was one of the very best all time in this business and also one of the most underrated performers of his era. With his ability to change styles and gimmicks, he was the David Bowie of the WWE for years. When a new Superstar went looking for first opponents, the WWE would often pair that person against Jericho because he was dependable, a marvel in the ring, and brought out the very best in whoever his opponent was. We wish Jericho the best as he hits the road with Fozzy, hosts his Talk is Jericho podcast, and gets to spend even more time with his family.
5. It was great seeing Zack Ryder on television again after taking time off to recover from a significant knee injury. His pairing with Mojo Rawley will stop Rawley's fall since WrestleMania and heat things up in the tag team division. Keep in mind that our sources indicate that the long term plans for both Rawley are Ryder include a Ryder heel turn and inevitable breakup with a proceeding feud between the two Hype Bros. We are very much looking forward to evil Zack Ryder.

It's Time for a Samoan Stable
As often happens with the beautiful summer months, time goes by ever so rapidly. SummerSlam will be here in two very short months and then there will be a build toward Survivor Series. As always, Survivor Series will be an all-in pay-per-view with both RAW and SmackDown participating in four on four style tag matches. The WWE has never had so much premiere Samoan talent on their roster. With the Usos, Roman Reigns, and Samoa Joe they have a perfect 4-man stable and Survivor Series team. Roman Reigns is a babyface, we know; but, he is currently misplaced as one. Turning him heel would make for a great opportunity for long-term success. If Samoa Joe defeats Brock Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire, he can do so with the help of Roman Reigns, who is incensed over Paul Heyman's comment (see quote of the week). Reigns can come in with the whole crowd expecting him to attack Joe; but, instead he turns his wrath on Brock Lesnar costing the Beast his Universal Championship. The WWE can still do the Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns match at the Royal Rumble. Reigns, the Usos and Samoa Joe can carry their faction to WWE domination ala the SHIELD all the way through WrestleMania season. Then and only then will Roman earn his championship opportunity against Samoa Joe. At first the two brothers in blood will seem capable of having the match without hurting their friendship; but, then Samoa Joe and the Usos will viciously turn on their own brother, whom the fans now respect due to his heel turn. Reigns can then go into WrestleMania 34 as the betrayed babyface and defeat Samoa Joe for the Universal Championship.

Stat of the Week
Undefeated NXT Women's Champion, Asuka, has now held the Title for 439 days, which passes CM Punk's 434 day WWE Championship reign. She is already the longest reigning NXT Champion in history and is quickly approaching New Day's recent 483 day mark as RAW Tag Team Champions. If she passes that mark, she will be the longest reigning champion in recent memory. The Honky Tonk Man had a historic Intercontinental Championship reign of 454 days and Lex Luger had an equally impressive United States Championship reign of 523 days. Both marks are within Asuka's sights. On sheer talent alone (she will be called up to the main roster long before) Asuka will never match Bruno Sammartino's longest reign in history. Sammartino held the WWE Championship for 2,803 consecutive days.
