NEWS: WWE Intercontinental Champion Roman Reigns (Leati Joseph Anoai) has been implicated in a steroid scandal out of his home state of Florida. Richard Rodriguez, owner of Iron Addicts (no pun intended) Gym in Miami, FL, was arrested in February 2017 by the DEA after months of investigating. According to the DEA, Rodriguez was part of an illegal distribution chain that brought in illegal steroids from China. After being taken into custody, Rodriguez named Roman Reigns as one of his clients. The scandal is particularly embarrassing to the WWE for a few reasons. For one the WWE takes great pride in its wellness testing, testing its wrestlers regularly. If Rodriguez' claims are true and Roman Reigns was taking steroids, it's a proverbial black eye on the WWE's entire wellness policy. Secondly, the WWE has been building Reigns as the heir apparent to Brock Lesnar for more than a year. Vince McMahon has been personally invested in Reigns and decided that Reigns would beat Lesnar for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34, before WrestleMania 33 even took place. Reigns' WrestleMania victory over the Undertaker, a monumental feat in wrestling history, was seen as a stepping stone to getting Reigns over and crowned as the inevitable Universal Champion. Third, Roman Reigns has already embarrassed the company by failing a previous wellness test during the pinnacle of his WWE run, while he held the WWE Championship. Most in the company believed he learned his lesson then; but, now many people backstage are on edge, as this latest scandal could drastically change WrestleMania 34 and the trajectory of Reigns' career. One thing is certain, Vince McMahon takes steroids seriously as a steroid scandal almost derailed the WWE and nearly put him behind bars in the early 1990s. McMahon escaped drastic consequences then; but, only narrowly and the company took a major PR hit with the public. It's been a bad week for the Anoai/Fatu family. Reigns' real-life cousin, Jey Uso (Joshua Fatu), was arrested this past weekend in Texas, on DWI charges.
