5/24/2016 - TUESDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK

Tuesday Morning Quarterback

Super Seth Rollins
Make no mistake about it. Extreme Rules was not a very good special event. Sure it had the Fatal 4-Way between Kevin Owens, Cesaro, the Miz, and Sami Zayn, which would be a Match of the Year Candidate, if not for the lackluster finish with the Miz (a relic of the "old era") winning. The main event was also a very good match, despite the interference from the Usos and Gallows & Anderson; but, the fans were incensed at WWE's biggest babyface (the fan's most hated wrestler) Roman Reigns winning and retaining the Title, which put a damper on the match. There were several matches on the card that were lackluster at best. Included in those were the Women's Championship match, which received only ten minutes of air-time. These two women (Natalya and Charlotte) put on one of the greatest matches in NXT history a couple of years ago; but, both times they've squared off on WWE's big stage, the Company refuses to simply let them wrestle unhindered without a screw-job finish. Perhaps the match only received ten minutes of air time because the Asylum Match received nearly 30 minutes and most of them were an unwatchable 30 minutes. The match featured both wrestlers struggle to reach for dangerous weapons like a kitchen mop and was painfully slow paced, with little fan interest. The crowd was silent for the majority of the match and things did not pick up until Ambrose found his way to some thumbtacks and then threw them on the floor. He then proceeded to slam and then Dirty Deeds Jericho onto the thumbtacks. Even this ode to old school violence couldn't save the match. So, why will we remember Extreme Rules as a good special event? Superman saved the day. After the main event ended and Reigns stood victorious in the ring behind a chorus of boos, the crowd popped as if 1998 "Stone Cold" made his way to the ring. Rollins returned and gave his former SHIELD running mate a Pedigree onto a steel chair, to a standing ovation. That's all it took to turn a lackluster show into a memorable one, which is a testament to how good Seth Rollins actually is.

Quote of the Week
"I'm no longer Ric Flair's daughter. You're Charlotte's dad." - Charlotte Flair to her Dad Ric before a stunned Baltimore, MD RAW crowd.

Five Things I Think I Think
1. Baron Corbin's promos are getting better every week. When Ziggler interrupted Corbin's interview with Renee Young, Corbin looked and sounded the part as a truly intimidating monster heel. Perhaps there is something in Ziggler's character that brings out the worst (or best depending on perspective) in Corbin; but, when he told Ziggler that he would break his body, I believed him. The sky is the limit for Corbin and he could be a major main event player in the near future.

2. Enzo Amore is a rare promo guy that can jaw with the best of him. He's good for Big Cass and Big Cass is good for him. While Amore was away, recovering from one of the scariest looking injuries in wrestling history, Big Cass' solo potential did not go unnoticed, as he has the size, athleticism, and charisma that Vince McMahon historically loves; however, Enzo Amore is jelly to Cass' peanut butter. These two just work together and although they both have a promising future as singles competitors, they also have a very promising future as a tag team. Their dynamic reminds me a lot of Shawn Michaels and Kevin Nash in the late 1990s. Enjoy them.

3. Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase tweeted that his good friend George "the Animal" Steele was battling serious health issues. I hope Steele will bounce back. He was one of the more memorable characters of the 1980s and who can forget his feud with "Macho Man" Randy Savage over Elizabeth? His stuffed animal "Mine" and his ring rope eating antics got "the Animal" super over with kids my age. Who, in wrestling history, had a more drastic dichotomy than George? By day, he was an intellectual history professor; but, in his night job, he was the nearly mute, feral, growling, ring-rope eating George "the Animal" Steele. The last time he and I talked, we both joked about going to the same barber (bald is beautiful) and he was jovial and in good spirits. Let's hope he pulls through. In the meantime, we'll keep George in our prayers.

4. You paid for your ticket, so you can technically chant anything you'd like to chant. You can hate Roman Reigns all you want; but, one thing you cant chant at him is, "You can't wrestle." If Roman has shown anything, it is that he has not had a subpar match in over a year and his matches are routinely among the evening's best. If you chant, "You Can't Wrestle" at Roman Reigns, then serious wrestling fans know you know nothing about wrestling.

5. Enjoy John Cena while he lasts. I know there was a time that Cena disliked the Rock for what he considered was the Rock abandoning wrestling for the Hollywood limelight. As the Rock would say, it  doesn't matter. Cena's non-wrestling opportunities have increased dramatically in recent years and the more opportunities he's taken, the more his star continually rises. The money is fantastic (better than wrestling money) and he doesn't have to risk injury working 300 nights a year for it. It's only a matter of time until John Cena makes more appearances in movies than he does in a wrestling ring.

6 (For Good Measure). It's wonderful to see Rusev & Lana getting the push they both deserve. Things haven't been good for the tandem since Rusev lost the United States Championship to John Cena, so hopefully this Title will get the ball rolling again for what once was a very promising career. It's hard to remember; but, Rusev had an entire year on the main roster where he was undefeated and seemed to be heading toward Monster Heel status. It isn't a good sign that Rusev & Lana weren't even on RAW the day after the big Title win. It's also not a good sign that John Cena returns next week, as it seems like Rusev may have been given the Championship only to drop it to a returning John Cena, who returns on Memorial Day, with a fervor of patriotism.

Seth Rollins is a Heel and Should Stay that Way
Fans took to Twitter in droves to complain about the fact that Seth Rollins came back as a heel. Look folks, when you have a Ferrari (and Rollins is the Ferrari of heels) you don't ask him to come back as a bicycle. Rollins is a natural heel and one of the greatest heels of all time. Just because the fans hate WWE's chosen babyface (Roman Reigns) doesn't mean that Rollins should be forced to turn face. That's just ludicrous and dumb. In all the whining and complaining the WWE Universe does, has anyone ever stopped to notice that the WWE has moved on from the antiquated notion of babyface and heel? People are just who they are and everyone is different just like the real world, which is why half the country sees the Democrats as good guys and the Republicans as evil and the other half sees the Republicans as good guys and the Democrats as evil. It's all based on your perspective. You may hate Roman Reigns; but, lots of little tykes buy his tee shirts and that's OK. While Roman Reigns is the type of babyface that would use a steel chair, maybe Cena isn't and that's OK. While Owens is the type of heel that likes to complain a whole lot, maybe Baron Corbin isn't and that's OK and so on and so on. Everyone is different and everyone offers their own unique brand of wrestling to the Universe. You're angry because you feel Roman is being forced; forced into a character he doesn't match and then forced onto you. Don't be a hypocrite then when Seth Rollins is not forced into being something he isn't.

Charlotte is Scary Good
Fans were made to feel very uncomfortable with the way Ric Flair was treated this Monday on RAW. Charlotte berated and abused the 16 time World Champion live on RAW before a stunned Baltimore crowd. It made many of us uncomfortable to see the emotional Ric Flair kicked out of the ring and wounded so badly. He's a 2-Time WWE Hall of Famer and we all know he doesn't deserve that, which isone of the reasons it's such compelling television. Charlotte, for her part, told her father that he was dead to her and convinced us all that she really meant it. Part of the reason why the entire promo was so convincing is because one gets the idea that there was a whole lot of truth and real emotion behind much of it. It felt like watching a fight at a special occassion and it made us all uncomfortable. It's a good thing to feel uncomfortable as a wrestling fan. A good heel should strive to make us feel uncomfortable. A step further, a real heel should make us feel terrible at times and we certainly did during this segment. The angle was controversial; but, it was a welcome departure from today's era of PG and PC wrestling. Charlotte is markedly improved in her promo work and has continually proven why she's been chosen as the WWE's top female wrestler.

Tweet of the Week
Stat of the Week
The Asylum Match is not Dean Ambrose's Match (not that he would want credit for it at this point). In 2000, former wrestler turned Hardee's manager Scott Steiner came up with the Asylum Match while wrestling for WCW.

The It's Time Rhyme
When fans boo Roman Reigns,
It gives Mr. McMahon chest pains
To Seth Rollins, the Universe cheers
Prompting Mr. McMahon to cry tears
